For all those who stayed in stuffy cities during quarantines and self-isolation, this campaign is a great opportunity to break free, immersed in the beautiful virgin nature of Gorny Altai - one of the most beautiful regions of Russia. In Altai we will find only purity, only freshness, crystal clear mountain rivers and streams, beautiful reserved lakes and valleys, passes and mountains, on which a person’s foot rarely steps.
A fairly complicated, but still accessible to almost any healthy person trip is offered as a reboot of emotions and life values after all the trials of spring and early summer of this difficult year for all of us.
Route day by day
Day 1. Barnaul - Tungur
Group meeting in Barnaul. Further, by custom transport, we are waiting for a transfer to the village of Tyungur - to the beginning of our walking route (it takes about 12-13 hours to get there). Part of the road will go along the Chuysky tract - the oldest route from Siberia to Asia, which today is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world and we will have the opportunity to see this. On the way we make stops for warm-ups and snacks. In the evening we arrive in the village of Tungur (translated as "Shaman's Tambourine"), surrounded by three rivers (Akkem, Katun and Kucherla), flowing down from the Belukha glaciers. We are accommodated in an equipped tourist base, set up tents, get acquainted at dinner and discuss further plans for the route.
Day 2. Tungur - “Three Birches” - Ak-Kem River
In the morning, after breakfast, we distribute part of the products and public equipment. The remaining part is left for abandonment, it will be delivered by horse / helicopter to Lake Ak-Kem. If desired, some things can be left at the campsite (see the "Useful Information" section). The first section of our path, consisting of a tedious climb through a forest pass, we will overcome by road GAZ-66. Next, we will make the transition to our parking lot, where we will set up tents, make a fire and prepare dinner.
Day 3. Ak-Kem River - Ak-Kem Lake
After breakfast, we hit the road along the gorge along the Ak-Kem River. More and more often, on the horizon, we will observe the sacred mountain Belukha until the gorge spreads and we go out to Akkem Lake (Ak-kem means “white water.” The lake is located at the foot of Belukha Mountain and eats meltwater from the Akkem glacier. In clear weather , the lake, like a mirror, reflects all the natural splendor. We set up a camp on the lake for the next three days, prepare dinner.
Day 4. Radial access to the chapel and Lake of the Mountain Spirits
Today we are waiting for a light walk to the highest mountain chapel in Russia, which is located at the foot of Belukha Mountain in front of the Akkem glacier. After seeing the attraction, we climb to the slope, where we get to the lake of Mountain Spirits ("Deny-Dery", from the alt. "Black Hollow"). The location of the lake looks pretty harsh. Around there are black rocks, moraines and a grasshopper, and among the black stone screes there is a small but beautiful emerald blue-tinted lake. Altaians have built many legends about this place. We return to the camp, relax, cook dinner.
Day 5. Radial exit to the Seven Lakes Valley
On this day we will make a radial exit to the valley of the Seven Lakes. A fabulously beautiful place ... streams everywhere, colorful lakes and flowering highland meadows. Locals claim that there are about thirty lakes, but the largest - only seven. All these seven lakes have different shades. According to geologists, this phenomenon is explained by the fact that the bottom of each lake is composed of different rocks. In addition, the different depths and suspensions of minerals give the lakes amazing shades. Among these wonderful landscapes and lakes, we will have a snack, and after arriving at the camp, we will prepare dinner.
Day 6. Radial exit to the Yarlu gorge
We will make another radial exit to the Yarlu valley (in the lane it means "gorge with cliffs"). The valley is a narrow gorge of the mountain river Yarlu, surrounded by a picturesque landscape with colorful rocks. Depending on the time of day, the hue of the mountains changes from light blue to bright orange and pink. At the end of the gorge, a "stone city" awaits us. In the center of this “city” lies a huge smooth boulder (“Master Stone”), around which, the followers of Roerich built an entire “city” or “garden” of pyramids of stones. Many endow the region of Lake Ak-Kem and the gorge itself with unusual energy. Upon returning to the camp, we will prepare for the next day, where we will already leave the lake and move further along the route. Those who wish can order a bath near the lake (additional charge).
Day 7. Ak-Kem Lake - Karatyurek Pass - Cedar Glade
Early rise and exit. On this day, we need to overcome the Karatyurek pass (in the alley from the Altai "Black Heart"; 3060 m). From the pass we will have fantastic views of: Milk Lake Akkem, the colorful Yarlu Gorge, the snow-white peaks of Belukha and the river valley. After the ascent, we are waiting for a descent down, where we spend the night among the cedar sites.
Day 8. Cedar Glade - Kucherlinskoe Lake
Today we will need to get to Kucherlinsky Lake. The lake is one of the most picturesque places in the Altai mountains and has the status of "Altai Nature Monument". It is filled with clear ice water, and steep peaks of the main ridge rise above the pond along the entire coast. We will camp on the lake.
Day 9. A day at Kucherlinsky Lake
Day, relax on the shore of Lake Kucherlinsky. If you wish, you can go for a walk and climb to the Green and Sinee lakes (located at an altitude of 2400 m) or just meditate on the shore of the lake (also, those who wish can go to a neighboring camp site where there is a cafe and a bathhouse).
Important! In case of bad weather, we use this day as a reserve day for passing the Karatyurek pass.
Day 10. Kucherlinskoe lake - glade Isekeryu
In the morning, after breakfast, we begin the descent along the Kucherla River to the Isekeryu Glade and go most of the day. In total we have to go 18 km, but what kinds are waiting for us around!
Day 11. Polyana Izekeru - Tungur
We continue to descend into civilization. On the way, we will visit the Kuylyu Grotto - an ancient sanctuary that was used by ancient people to conduct sacred rites. Cave paintings are still visible on the walls of the grotto. Mount Kuylyu is a particularly revered and sacred place for the peoples living here. We get to the camp site. In the evening - a farewell and tasty dinner. If desired, you can order Russian sauna (for a fee).

Recommendations for clothes and equipment
Since the weather in Altai is full of surprises, we recommend to take seriously the selection of clothes and shoes.
For this tour, you definitely need to have the following hiking clothing and equipment: hiking pants, fleece, trekking boots, climbing cats, a hat, thermal underwear, a warm sleeping bag (overnight stays can be quite cold), a membrane jacket, a light down jacket, gloves, trekking sticks , head flashlight, personal thermos. Due to the possible large amount of rain, it is also necessary to have a rain cover (or other reliable protection against rain in field conditions) and (sure!) A protective cover for the backpack. Backpack for men: 65 - 90 liters, for women: 45 - 65 liters. For day trips, you must have a second, small backpack of 20-30 liters.
Depending on the weather, flight delays, problems with roads and transport, as well as the well-being of the tour participants, the instructor HAS THE RIGHT to correct the route, excluding from it some points that were planned by the program or replacing them with other, simpler ones! In this case, the initiative of participants to change the program is NOT ALLOWED! If you are not ready to follow the declared program, are not ready to trust the instructor, you had better choose another tour or travel on your own!
