Hike to Jack London Lake (via Kolyma Reservoir)
Tour Dates: August 28 - September 9, 2025
Lake Jack London is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Far East, and many people think it is the most beautiful lake in all of Russia. The place is very remote, hard to reach, but that is why it is especially attractive for anyone who considers themselves a true traveler. Let's put it simply: visiting Lake Jack London is a must-see on your list of places to visit in this life! And if you haven't checked this box yet, welcome!
A brief introduction to the lake. The lake is located in the Yagodinsky District of the Magadan Region, about 600 km from Magadan and 803 meters above sea level. The lake is 10 kilometers long in the northwest direction and reaches a depth of 50 meters. The highest point in the lake area is Aborigen Peak (2,586 meters above sea level).
This year we offer an unconventional route to the lake: through the village of Ust-Omchug - the Vetrenny mine and the village of Obo, then a boat crossing over the Kolyma Reservoir and a hike to the lake along the Sibik-Tyellakh stream. The route, of course, is not a first ascent, but it is so rarely walked (by commercial groups, it seems, never at all!) that we have assigned it 5 stars on our internal difficulty scale, that is, the maximum score. And it is really difficult: the absence of roads and paths, thickets of dwarf pine, swamps and many fords - what could be more attractive for people keen on real adventures )))
In any case, this is an expedition format, and not a classic tour, where everything has been worked out many times, so participants should be ready to adjust plans and the route depending on circumstances and weather.
Nature at this time of year is at its most beautiful in the Kolyma region - golden autumn in all its splendor, but the weather is fraught with anomalies - sudden cold snaps and snowfall. That is, the chance to get from golden autumn straight into snowy winter is quite high. However, for true connoisseurs of adventure, this also has its own charm, doesn't it? )))

Magadan - Ust-Omchug - Obo
We take a minibus we ordered to the village of Ust-Omchug on the Staro-Kolymskaya highway, there we change to a shift bus and drive another 120 km along a bad country road to the Kolyma reservoir in the area of the abandoned mine "Vetrenny" and the micro-village of Obo. Depending on the arrangements with the boat, we either cross to the other bank on the same day and set up camp, or we set up camp on this bank and wait for the crossing the next morning.
Let's start the hike!
We begin the walking part of our journey. Today we will go to the mouth of the Sibik-Tyellakh stream, which flows into the Kolyma reservoir, and walk along its bed for 10-15 km. The distance is quite short for a normal hike, but the terrain is so difficult that it will be very difficult to overcome even this distance, believe me.
Up the Sibik-Tyellakh Stream
We continue our hike up the Sibik-Tyellakh Stream. Again, our hiking norm is 10-15 km. If we can go more, we are real heroes!
Lake Jack London
All first half of the day we will walk along the stream, and in the second half of the day, when the channel goes sharply to the left, we will continue moving straight and, passing along many small lakes, we will come to the shore of Lake Jack London - big, beautiful and so desirable! We will set up camp on its shore.
Biologov foreland
A daytime hike along the lake shore and by evening we will arrive at Biologov foreland - a real resort for these harsh places. There is a beautiful sandy beach, excellent, flat places for tents, there is even a bathhouse! And all around - beauty!!!
Day at the biologists' foreland
A day's rest after 4 days of a hard hike through the wilderness and swamps. If the weather is good, you can lie on the beach, swim and even sunbathe. You can gorge yourself on blueberries and lingonberries, munch on cedar nuts, which have gained their juice by this time. You can meet the most beautiful sunrise and no less beautiful sunset.
The Purga River
We cross the lake by boat in several stages to the other side - to the mouth of the Purga River. There is also an equipped tourist camp here, and at the confluence of the river and the lake, grayling is caught like crazy - take ruble gear, excellent fishing is almost guaranteed!
After crossing the lake, we set up camp and again indulge in camping entertainment - eating berries, picking mushrooms, fishing or leisurely walks along the lake shore and photo sessions, fortunately the places here are stunningly beautiful and the photos will be the envy of all your friends. Girls, don't be lazy to take a couple of beautiful light dresses on this trip - they will definitely come in handy here!)))
Lakes Dream, Anemone and Gray Gull
In the morning, after breakfast and packing up camp, we will make a short 6-kilometer hike along the lake shore to the beginning of the channel connecting the lakes of Jack London and Dancing Grayling. There we will set up camp, have lunch and go to the radial exit to the lakes of Dream, Anemone and Gray Seagull. The lakes are located above the level of Lake Jack London and from them a majestic panorama of both these lakes themselves and most of Lake Jack London opens up, as well as from here the lake of Dancing Grayling is in the palm of your hand.
On the way back we will stop by the "Boevoy" camp on the shore of the lake of Dancing Grayling, and then, along a good road, we will return to our camp.
Spare day
Spare day in case of delays on the way during the first part of the hike, as well as bad weather.
If there are no delays, and we are very lucky with the weather, there will be no problem keeping yourself busy on Jack London Lake - berries, mushrooms, fishing, photo sessions - all this is literally at every step and you will not get tired of it, no matter how much you do it))
On the way back
In the morning we load into the shift bus and drive towards the settlement of Yagodnoye on the Kolyma highway. However, the road to the highway is 8 km from the village, the village itself is not of particular interest, therefore, in order to save time, we will try to connect the transport in such a way that upon arrival on the highway we will immediately transfer to the minibus waiting for us and arrive in Magadan by evening. However, transport logistics in the Magadan region is not simple and this is not always possible, therefore, there is an option to camp in a specially equipped place near the highway and go to Magadan the next morning.
Magadan
One way or another, we will be in Magadan on this day. Walking around the city, buying souvenirs, farewell dinner.

We will walk from 10 to 20 km a day with heavy backpacks on difficult terrain, in swampy areas with thickets of cedar and birch elfin trees, without paths and roads, the weight of backpacks, taking into account food and general equipment for men is 25-30 kg, for women - 20-25 kg.
In addition, during the hike there may be heavy rains and even snow, night frosts and other weather anomalies, and in addition to them, delays on the way and waiting with an element of uncertainty, you must be mentally prepared for all this.
The weather in the Magadan region does not spoil you with warmth and a large number of sunny days, it is harsh and unpredictable. Therefore, take the selection of clothes and shoes for this trip seriously!
You will definitely need: a membrane jacket, a raincoat, a light down jacket or vest, a fleece, two pairs of hiking pants (waterproof or quick-drying), thermal underwear, good trekking boots, waders or marsh boots, trekking poles, a headlamp, a mosquito net, an 80-100 liter backpack with a protective cover for it... A full list of necessary clothes, shoes and equipment will be sent to you after signing up for the tour and making an advance payment.
For fishermen and those who would like to become one, this is a paradise - take your fishing gear with you! For those who like to swim in cold water - bathing accessories, because there will be plenty of opportunities to swim))
Тur is very active and eventful, therefore it requires discipline and personal involvement in the process from the participants.
During the trip by car, delays and unforeseen circumstances are possible - car breakdowns, river floods, road and bridge repairs. During the trip, the route may be adjusted depending on the current weather, possible injuries and the condition of the participants. Changes are discussed with the participants, but the final decision is up to the instructor, since he is responsible for the program and the safety of the group.
During the trip, the group moves at the speed of the weakest participant, dividing the group into "weak and strong", as well as any other division of the group is not allowed! If you are not ready to help each other, are not ready to be part of one team, you should go on this or a similar trip on your own.
All participants are involved in cooking on a duty or voluntary basis!
This trip does not provide a separate menu for vegetarians and / or vegans. If you belong to one of these categories, of course, you can take part in the hike, but you are personally responsible for your food, claims against the organizers for the lack of sufficient vegetarian food are not accepted!
Participants buy air tickets themselves. It is better to do this in advance - in December-February, at this time the lowest price is possible plus the opportunity to buy subsidized tickets (if you belong to one of the categories of citizens for whom this is possible).
Arrival in Magadan and departure from it earlier or later than the dates specified in the program is paid by the participants themselves, including transfer to / from the airport.
