In early July, it is not yet the season on the home volcanoes of Kamchatka - Avachinsky, Mutnovsky, Gorelom, Vilyuchinsky - too much snow, hard to get to. But in the Klyuchevskoy cluster in the area of volcanoes, in the Tolbachinsky Dol, the climate is completely different - sharply continental and the season already begins there in July, but there are practically no people - everyone wants to combine Tolbachik/Klyuchevskaya and home volcanoes, so they go in late July - August, when Kamchatka is literally jammed with tourists - tourist camps are full of completed documents, everyone is occupied in the houses and under the awnings and just to cook food on a fire or eat under a roof, you will have to wait 2-3 hours. That is why we are focusing on our trip in early to mid-July, when in the vastness of the Tolbachinsky Dol there will be only us and ... virgin, wild, but pure and literally stunning in its scale and reality of nature.

In addition, at the beginning of July there is still a lot of snow on the slopes of Klyuchevskaya Sopka, and this will increase the safety of the ascent! This is written in detail in the report on our Climbing to Kluchevskaya Sopka for 2022, be sure to read it! The program of this trip includes an ascent to one of the most active and character volcanoes in Russia - Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Good weather is needed to climb this volcano, so we are closing 3 spare days, which, perhaps, the pandemic will spend in a cold place, blown by northern winds on the eve of the plateau in anticipation of good weather (all equipment should be like for a winter hike!). Climbing to the top of Klyuchevskaya Sopka is a difficult and quite dangerous (!!!) event, participants must have experience of climbing a 5K+ mountain, and also understand very well where they are going and the degree of risk that awaits them.

This will be a very, very difficult journey, which only experienced and strong-willed climbers and hikers can handle, but it is worth it, believe me! Even if you have already been to seven- and eight-thousanders, Klyuchevskaya Sopka will take a worthy place in your personal collection of victories. Over yourself.

Please note that the program below is APPROXIMATE and can adjust the course depending on the weather, the state of the volcano, as well as the health and condition of the participants. This is not a standard tour, where everything is calculated by the hour and strictly regulated. In the wild and completely absent, various weather anomalies are possible, participants may be injured - all this affects the passage of the route and often leads to a situation where it is necessary to change or even stop the program for reasons of safety and common sense.

Itinerary day by day:

Arrival in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Immediately upon arrival, having received our luggage, we load into a waiting minibus and set off on a long journey to the village of Kozyrevsk, which is a transit base to Klyuchevskaya and Tolbachik. Upon arrival, we settle in for the night in a modest guest house, get acquainted, distribute food and communal equipment among the backpacks. Joint dinner, briefing before leaving for the starting point of the hike to Klyuchevskaya Sopka.

Those who wish - those who do not tolerate jet lag well and need preliminary acclimatization in time and climate, can fly to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky a day or two earlier, get to the city on their own, and stay in a hotel or hostel. On the day of departure, we will pick you up in the city and go together to the airport to meet the group.

Early rise, at 8 am we are already boarding a shift bus and are dropped off at the Kopyto campsite, where the hiking section of the route begins.

Upon arrival at the place, we will make a 9-kilometer trek to the Edelweiss Glade campsite, where there is a canopy, a stream and beautiful surroundings. It will be enough for the first day, especially since there are simply no places with clean water further on where you can set up camp - the nearest campsite is still 17 km away.

Early rise, breakfast and we set off on a hike to the foot of Klyuchevskaya Sopka. On this day, we will cross the Studenaya River, looking for 15 minutes into its famous stone canyon, overcome a fairly long section of the tundra "plowed up" by a mudflow in 2024, walk along the edge of an old lava field and climb to the end of the Bogdanovich Glacier, which in this place does not resemble a glacier - the ice has long been hidden under a thick layer of ash, slag, stones, that is, it is a moraine. We will choose a place for camp and overnight either near one of the small rain lakes, or on the bank of a stream - depending on where the water is cleaner.

We continue our hike to the starting point of the ascent to Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Today we will walk along the Bogdanovich Glacier, cross it and reach the Malaya Antarctica Glacier. The terrain is complex: alternating snowfields with raging streams, ice cracks, fords across streams flowing over the ice, slag and rock mountains with loose rocks...

We will set up camp on one of the slag "islands" formed as a result of numerous eruptions of Klyuchevskaya Sopka over the Malaya Antarctica Glacier.

Having overcome the short in mileage, but rather difficult to pass Vulkanologists Pass, we will reach its upper part, where there is a small house and places for tents. This is the starting point of the ascent to Klyuchevskaya Sopka, 3300 meters above sea level.

Depending on the situation (in different years, the ascent to Vulkanologists Pass took from 2-3 to 8 hours), we will either set up camp and rest, or go to the slope of Klyuchevskaya Sopka for acclimatization.

Planned acclimatization hike to Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Depending on the weather, we will reach a height of 3500 - 4100 meters, after which we will return to the camp to rest.

A rest day before the ascent. We sleep, walk around the neighborhood, go to bed early to get up early.

Climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Wake up at 2-3 am, have a quick breakfast and set off for the climb, which, depending on the weather and the preparedness of the participants, takes a total of (including the descent) 12 to 18 hours.

The climb itself takes one day, but is only possible in good weather, so we plan three days, one of which, depending on the actual weather, will be the day of the climb and two spare days. If a miracle happens and we are able to climb the volcano on the first day (or the second), we will leave earlier for Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and spend one or two days on the shore of the Pacific Ocean, on the famous Khalaktyrsky beach, where you can surf, or just wander along the black sand and enjoy the riot of nature and its scale, which here, on the ocean, are felt to the same full extent as near the great Kamchatka volcanoes.

Participants must be mentally prepared for the fact that the ascent will fail. According to statistics, for every one successful ascent there are two unsuccessful attempts! In 99.5% of cases this is due to a long period of bad weather - low clouds, fog, rain and snow, hurricane winds, which do not allow the ascent on the days allotted for this, in 0.5% of cases - due to high activity of the volcano at the time of our arrival - emissions of lava from the crater and a large number of volcanic bombs, which makes the ascent too dangerous.

Descent along the glacier, exit to a comfortable (compared to the glacier) volcanic plateau and the way back to the Edelweiss Glade parking lot.

An easy 9-kilometer hike compared to everything that came before to the Kopyto campsite, where we board a shift bus and head to the village of Kozyrevsk. There we find a simple, but after the hike, simply gorgeous hotel and a bathhouse!

In the morning we take the bus and travel all day to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The last night is at the hotel.

Transfer to the airport and flight home. Farewell, Kamchatka!

The tour price includes:

  • all transfers, buses and drops in Kamchatka,
  • accommodation in hotels in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Kozyrevsk,
  • three meals a day on the field - hot breakfasts and dinners, as well as snacks (dry rations) for lunch,
  • general camping equipment (tents, pots, burners, gas), as well as a large first aid kit, bear and mosquito repellent, satellite communications for emergency calls,
  • registration of passes and permits to the national park "Volcanoes of Kamchatka", environmental fees for the use of recreational resources, group registration with the Ministry of Emergency Situations,
  • guide's work,
  • group and individual photographs of each participant, taken during the entire trip using professional photographic equipment and provided in electronic form,
  • a certificate of ascent for each participant who completed the ascent.

The tour price does NOT include:

  • air tickets to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and back,
  • meals in cafes and restaurants, including meals on the way to the village of Kozyrevsk and back,
  • visa support (we work only with those foreign participants who have a visa to Russia or can enter without a visa),
  • health insurance,
  • clothing and personal equipment of participants,
  • souvenirs and other personal expenses of participants,
  • other expenses not listed in the "included in the price" section

This is a very difficult tour! It requires serious physical and mental preparation, good personal hiking clothes and equipment, experience in climbing or, at a minimum, categorized mountain or sports hiking is required.

We will walk from 15 to 30 km per day on difficult terrain with backpacks weighing 25-30 kg for men and 20-25 kg for women. Almost all overnight stays are in tents, often in the rain and strong wind, and near Klyuchevskaya Sopka - on ice and/or snow. Part of the route near Klyuchevskaya Sopka is on a glacier.

Keep in mind that climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka is a more difficult and much more dangerous undertaking than climbing Elbrus, Kazbek or Kilimanjaro! Climbing Klyuchevskaya Sopka is associated with a risk to life: rockfalls are very likely - both individually flying stones and large groups of stones, emissions from the mouth of volcanic bombs, lava and toxic gas eruptions. The organizers of the ascent will make every effort to ensure the safety of the participants, but cannot guarantee 100% safety, since we are invading an unpredictable and uncontrollable natural element.

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, an early exit from the route, evacuation of the entire group (by the participants) is possible, which already happened in 2021, you must be mentally prepared for this too! Evacuation is carried out at the expense of the tour organizer, further stay in Kamchatka, including travel and accommodation (except for the last day, included in the tour price) - at the expense of the participants.

When going on this trip, you must understand that you are taking a risk and accept the possible consequences of this risk for yourself! It's your decision and your responsibility for your life!
